When we think about documenting our children, we often think about milestones.
A first birthday.
The first day of school.
Losing the first tooth.
Graduation.
Those moments absolutely deserve to be celebrated. They’re exciting, memorable, and easy to recognize as moments we’ll want to remember.
But as a Southern Maryland family photographer, I’ve learned something over the years.
The moments families treasure most often aren’t the milestones at all.
They’re everything in between.

Childhood Isn’t Measured Only by Milestones
One day your toddler suddenly stops asking to be carried.
Your preschooler starts buckling their own seatbelt.
Your little one still reaches for your hand crossing the parking lot… until one day they don’t.
No one tells you those moments are the last.
They simply happen.
Childhood changes quietly.
It’s not always the birthdays or holidays that surprise us when we look back. Sometimes it’s the expression they always made when they laughed. The way they tucked their feet underneath themselves while reading a book. The missing front teeth that somehow disappeared almost overnight.
These ordinary moments become extraordinary because they don’t last.

The Beauty of an Ordinary Tuesday
As parents, we spend so much time waiting for “the next big thing.”
The next birthday.
The next school year.
The next family vacation.
But our children aren’t only growing during the milestones.
They’re growing on ordinary Tuesdays.
They’re becoming who they are while building blanket forts in the living room, helping stir pancake batter, picking flowers in the backyard, or laughing so hard they can barely catch their breath.
Those moments deserve to be remembered just as much.

Why I Love Photographing Personality
One of my favorite compliments from parents is hearing:
“That is so them.”
Not because of the outfit.
Not because of the location.
Because the photograph captured something real.
The sideways smile.
The endless curiosity.
The shy glance.
The belly laugh.
Those are the images that become priceless over time.
As a child photographer in Southern Maryland, my goal has never been to simply create beautiful portraits.
It’s to preserve personalities.

There Doesn’t Have to Be a Special Occasion
One of the biggest misconceptions about family photography is that there has to be a reason.
A birthday.
A holiday.
A major life event.
But your family doesn’t need a milestone to be worthy of remembering.
Sometimes the reason is simply:
“I don’t want to forget this version of my child.”
Honestly, that’s reason enough.

Looking Back Years From Now
Years from now, I don’t think you’ll wish you had taken more pictures of birthday cakes.
I think you’ll wish you had more photographs of bedtime stories.
Bare feet in the grass.
The gap-toothed grin.
The favorite stuffed animal that went everywhere.
The way your child reached for your hand without thinking.
Those are the moments that quietly disappear.
They’re also the moments that become your family’s history.
Don’t Wait for the Next Milestone
The next milestone will come.
It always does.
But don’t let it become the only reason you document your family.
Because life isn’t made up of milestones alone.
It’s made up of ordinary afternoons that become treasured memories before we even realize they’re gone.
If there’s one thing I hope families remember, it’s this:
You don’t need a special occasion to celebrate this season.
This season is already special.
