Capturing Timeless Moments: When Is the Best Time for a Newborn Session?

Welcoming a new addition to the family is an incredible experience, and as a parent, you want to preserve those precious early moments forever. One common question that arises when considering a newborn session is, “How old should my baby be?” The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer, but capturing your baby in the first few weeks can result in beautifully tender and authentic portraits. While I recommend scheduling the session between 5 and 21 days of age, I have successfully completed newborn sessions on babies as old as 15 weeks.

The Early Days: 7 Days Old

At just 7 days old, your baby is still in the newborn bubble, with delicate features and that irresistible newborn sweetness. These early days are perfect for capturing the tiny details – from their tiny fingers to their little button nose. Here’s a sneak peek into what a newborn session at 7 days old might look like:

Two Weeks In: 18 Days Old

Around the two-week mark, your baby starts to settle into their routine, and you may notice more alertness and subtle changes in their expressions. A newborn session at 14-21 days old captures the beginning of their personality starting to shine through. Here’s a glimpse of the adorable moments you can expect:

Growing Fast: 10 Weeks Old

While the term “newborn” typically refers to the first few weeks, capturing your baby at 10 weeks old can result in equally heartwarming images. At this stage, your baby is more alert, responsive, and may even reward you with heart-melting smiles. Here’s a look at what a session with a 10-week-old baby might include:

Tips for a Successful Newborn Session

  • Flexibility is Key: Newborns can be unpredictable, so flexibility in scheduling and patience during the session are crucial. This is especially true as they get older!
  • Comfort is a Priority: We keep your baby comfortable with cozy blankets, gentle poses, and a warm environment.
  • Capture the Details: Whether it’s tiny fingers, soft curls, or those sleepy yawns, focus on the small details that make your baby unique.

Remember, every baby is different, and there’s no “right” time for a newborn session. The best time is when you feel ready and when you want to freeze those fleeting moments in time. So, whether it’s in the first few days or a bit later, a newborn session is a timeless investment in capturing the essence of your little one’s earliest days.
